Spanish Sub Plans: World Heritage Sites of Latin America
These Spanish sub plans can be carried out by any sub while you are out of the classroom. Even better, you won't have to feel guilty that your students aren't learning while you are gone!
This set includes 5 full classes of lessons based on various World Heritage Sites of Latin America. Each on is ready to print & go, requires no technology, do not require the sub to produce any Spanish, and can be differentiated for any level of Spanish class.
Each lesson walks students through important and interesting information related to a different UNESCO World Heritage Site and asks them to use higher-order thinking skills, problem solving, and critical thinking skills to understand the culture behind that site.
World Heritage Sites addressed in these lessons include:
-Lake Xochimilco (Mexico)
-Tikal National Park (Guatemala)
-Nazca Lines (Perú)
-Qhapaq Ñan & the Andean Road System (Various)
-Cueva de las Manos (Argentina)
Students will work step by step to learn about each site through a series of activities that ask them to use what they have learned and apply it to the present day, make cultural inferences about the purpose and origin of these sites, and compare these sites to their own culture and others. Each lesson asks students to think about the site in the larger cultural context as they make observations and consider some thought provoking questions.
QR codes are also included in many of the lessons (though not required to use) in case your students need extra support. The QR codes, when scanned, will take them to additional information that will help them complete the activities and understand the lesson.
These lessons are fully aligned with the ACTFL cultural competencies for world language learners and also can be used to address several of the culture themes found on the AP Spanish test.
Preterite Tense - All Skill Activities
These activities target the Preterite Tense through all four skill areas (listening, reading, writing, speaking). The activities provide a meaningful context through which students can first interpret the Preterite Tense through listening and reading and then produce it themselves with opportunities for both written and oral production.
Listening - Students will listen to 16 statements (teacher script provided) about what different people did either today or yesterday. They must listen for the verb endings to decide whether the action was done "hoy" or "ayer".
Reading - Students will read a short passage (in Spanish) about a party gone wrong. They will then identify all preterite tense verbs within the passage and complete a chart based on the person of each verb. They will also respond to several reading comprehension questions about the events of the party.
Writing - Students will take on the role of several characters of the story and write the answers to questions about the events of the party from that characters point of view.
Speaking - Students will take on the role of either a police officer or party attendee as an interrogation about the events of the party takes place.

Spanish IPA - Introductions & Providing Basic Personal Information
This integrated performance assessment will help you gauge the proficiency level of your students in the areas of interpretive reading, interpretive listening, interpersonal speaking, presentational writing, and presentational speaking.
The assessment tasks that students will be asked to perform align directly to following ACTFL performance indicators for Novice-Mid learners:
-I can introduce myself and provide basic personal information
-I can say my name and ask someone else's name
-I can understand when someone asks for my name
-I can understand when people introduce themselves
-I can fill out a form with my name, address, phone number, birthdate and nationality

La Hora Latina
This Power Point addresses the cultural difference in respect to time and punctuality as it exists in Hispanic culture. Included in the Power Point are questions for discussion, basic information, example party invitations, and 2 wrap-up activities.

El Hotel Internet Activity
In this activity, students access the website for the Hotel Plaza Florencia in Mexico City and the Hotel San Francisco Plaza in Guadalajara. They will navigate the sites, in Spanish, and demonstrate their ability to find and understand basic information by completing the activities. This is a great real life activity that allows students to use problem solving skill and reading strategies.
"Bailando" & The Present Progressive Tense (Gerunds)
This activity goes along with the song "Bailando" by Enrique Iglesias which is readily available on YouTube and iTunes. In this activity, students listen to the song and complete the missing lyrics. They are instructed on the formation of gerunds and asked to locate 6 gerunds in the lyrics of the song. Then, they are asked to locate certain lines of the song, copy them, and manipulate them. The manipulation of the lyrics requires them to use the Present Progressive Tense. Finally students will use what they have learned to write simple sentences using the Present Progressive Tense to explain what different people are doing in the music video. The lesson also includes a short artist bio. Students will practice listening, reading, and writing in this lesson.

El Año Nuevo Infographic Reading Activities
Do you want to teach students about New Years traditions in the target culture without a boring lecture? Do you always see awesome infographics and you just don't know what to do with them?

"Gracias a Ti" & Thanksgiving (Día de Acción de Gracias)
Do you want to celebrate Thanksgiving free form word searches and crossword puzzles?
These activities go along with the song "Gracias a Ti" by Wisin y Yandel which is readily available on YouTube and iTunes. In this activity, students listen to the song and complete the missing lyrics. Then, students will use their knowledge of basic Spanish vocabulary to match the Spanish lyrics with their English meanings. This will give them a good idea as to what the song is about (being thankful). They will then use these newly learned words and phrases from the song to write 4 brief "thank you" notes (in Spanish) to friends, family, or teachers.
There is also a cultural reading about the celebration of Thanksgiving in Puerto Rico. After reading it, students will complete the included Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the holidays in Puerto Rico and the U.S.

"El Perdón" & Demonstrative Adjectives and Pronouns
These activities are meant to help students learn how to use demonstrative adjectives and pronouns in Spanish.
These activities go along with the song "El Perdón" by Nicky Jam and featuring Enrique Iglesias. This song is readily available on YouTube and iTunes and a link to the song is referenced.
After reviewing a brief biography of both artists, students are asked to listen to the song several times and fill in the lyrics that have been removed. Then, students are given an overview of the concept of demonstrative adjectives and pronouns and asked to locate and observe their use in the lyrics of the song. Students then are asked to find and copy certain vocabulary words used within the song. Students then apply their new understanding of demonstrative adjectives to produce the requested phrases in Spanish.

Cocinero de Hierro (Iron Chef) Virtual Food Challenge
Spice up your food unit with this fun group of activities in which students take part in a virtual iron chef style competition. They begin by choosing 3 ingredient playing cards, then they search a Spanish language recipe site for dishes containing those 3 ingredients. Next, they put together a grocery list, breaking down the items they still need by food group to demonstrate comprehension. They answer questions from the judges about the preparation of the dish as they "cook". Finally, they present their dishes to the judges with a drawing/picture and Spanish description of the meal they have prepared.

Silly Spanish Sentences - Reflexive Verbs
Silly Spanish Sentence Activities are a great way to motivate students and spice up your typical boring grammar drills while building vocabulary.
These activities promote both interpretive reading and presentational writing skills. They provide a structure that will help struggling students while at same time allowing more advanced students to add details according to their abilities. This type of self-differentiation is very helpful in classes where students are at a variety of stages in their fluency and language acquisition.
Students will choose 1 word each from a series of word boxes with the goal of creating funny sentences. They will need to apply grammatical concepts like conjugation and sentence structure while at the same time recognizing key vocabulary items. When they have created 10 sentences, they will choose a favorite and write it on the tear-off section of the activity.

Spanish Dictionary Skills: Dictionary vs Translator
This activity will help beginning or advanced students understand the limitations of language translators and encourage them to build fluency by using these and other tools for the right reasons.
The temptation of an online translator is irresistible to many new language students who lack the patience or drive that it takes to learn another language. Not only will this lesson help your students to see why you WILL KNOW if they use a translator, but it will help you to set ground rules as to the use of these and other tools both inside and outside of the classroom.
Students will begin this activity by learning about several online tools that may help students studying a foreign language and the appropriate use of each. Then they will compare/contrast two of those tools - an online Spanish/English dictionary and Google Translate - by first looking up underlined words in 30 sentences in the dictionary and then comparing that to what the translator says. By the end of the lesson, students will clearly see situations in which the translator was not able to make correct decisions on word choice and the increased control that using a dictionary offers.

"Complemento" & The Present Tense of Dar, Ser, and Ir
Present Tense Irregular verbs like Dar, Ser, and Ir can be hard for students to master, but with these song activities, your students will learn them in a context that will help them remember them for a long time.

Students are asked to listen to the song several times and fill in the lyrics that have been removed. Then, students are given an overview of the verbs dar, ir, and ser, including their meanings and present tense conjugation. Students then are asked to find and copy certain verses of the song. Students then use their new understanding of these three verbs to manipulate the meanings of those verses. Finally, students are asked to complete a writing activity that deals with the theme of their "complemento" and what that person is like (ser), where they go (ir), and what they give (dar).
